| Of the over 22,500 known meteorites, only about 13 are non-Antarctic Diogenites. Bilanga is the "newest" of this VERY RARE group! This is also a WITNESSED FALL of limited availability, so the price has only "up" to go! Diogenites are named for the 5th century greek philospher Diogenes of Apollonia. Some historians credit him with being the first person to suggest that meteorites came from beyond the Earth. These curious meteorites are almost pure orthopyroxene; they are made up of large crystals of iron-rich hypersthene and bronzite, with about 12% iron by weight. Diogenites are cumulates of mostly a single pure mineral. The large crystals mean that diogenites are plutonic; that is they must have formed within their parent body under slowly cooling conditions, which allowed large crystals to form. Diogenites are in the Achondrite group. |
