| An ammonite was a shelled creature that lived in the early oceans and sea's. It had a coiled shell, that grew as the creature grew. The individual chambers of growth are called the "life chambers" and the walls that seperated the chambers are called the suture-lines. These are very much the "fingerprint" of the ammonite and allows for identification of one species from another. All ammonites belong to the family Cephalopod. The creature itself was very much like a squid, in that it had tentacles... It was one of the first creatures to use eyesight for predation. They were most abundant during the Paleozoic Era...400 million years ago...although they lived right up to, and throughout when the dinosaurs did...and died out when the Dinosaurs did about 65 million years ago. They swam by squirting-out water through the body cavity (propulsion). We have the Lowest prices anywhere on Quality Ammonite specimens.
